When folks start peeking behind the veil of the material world, they often bump into the term "Magick." For some, there's a bit of unease, maybe because they don't fully grasp its essence. Yet, for others, magick is enigmatic and mysterious.
So, what's the deal with magick, and what does it mean to be a Magus (or "magi" for the plural enthusiasts), or as we simply put it in our school, a Mag?
Magick is multidimensional. There's its rich history, its scientific angle, the hands-on practical magick, and the more ceremonious ritualistic magick. It intersects with tradition, medicine, technology, and yes, it can even be viewed as a form of weaponry. For some, it’s purely the work of consciousness. Magick can be a life’s purpose. It extends into psychology, where it becomes parapsychology. Plus, there are so many different types of magick.
Covering the entire spectrum of magick in a brief article? That's a tough task. But, I'll touch on some fundamentals, like the roots of the word "magick," its historical significance, and how it's interpreted in our modern teachings. We'll also see how different groups perceive it. I prefer spelling magick with a "k" at the end to distinguish it from the illusionary magic of stage shows. This distinction points out that we're not discussing the likes of David Copperfield or Houdini.
Rewinding back to before the time of Latin, Greek, and Ancient Persian, to the Proto-Indo-European word "Magh," it signified being "able" or having the capacity to act. The Persians later adopted "Maghu," highlighting one's ability to perform rituals. This implied a significant level of experience, education, and often initiation. It depicted a person of considerable power. This concept of a "Mag" evolved across various cultures, embodying a shaman in China, wisdom and philosophy in Jewish culture, a keeper of secret knowledge in Greece, and even a psychic in Syria.
In its linguistic and cultural journey, a Mag has come to mean someone capable of extraordinary feats, a skilled philosopher, and psychic endowed with secret or esoteric knowledge, wisdom, and powers. Logically, this suggests that if you can do something others can't, you're a Mag in their eyes, and vice versa.
This sheds light on why some religions fear magick. If someone possesses knowledge or performs acts beyond your understanding, they could be perceived as a threat. Often, the reaction to such a threat is offense, leading to magick and Mags being attacked, banned, and shamed throughout history.
So what does magick mean in today’s world? According to the model I teach in our school it means evolution of your consciousness, knowledge and skill. The evolution of consciousness is what people call spiritual growth. The knowledge means learning theory, history, terminology and the scientific part of magic. The skill means practice. This skill can be developed in people. How much and how fast? It depends on their current spiritual level, their potential and their dedication.
To the religious magick may appear dark. Let’s be honest, big religion has always been about control and power. However, magick is all about individuality. Therefore, Mags cannot be sheep. It is impossible control them. Science may view magick as a historical footnote, unable to quantify or document it fully.
For Mags, magick is a profound science, a legacy from civilizations far more advanced than ours. It's about rediscovering and leveraging ancient knowledge and technologies that survived a civilization's downfall. After the fall of the Atlantis, some ancient Mags found themselves reborn on a planet nearly razed to the ground. These Mags, endowed with memories from their past lives, became the bearers of ancient wisdom and technology. Today, we have the privilege to embrace their legacy, attempting to revive and harness this profound wisdom and their advanced tools. Thus, those among us today who dedicate themselves to studying this ancient knowledge, who aim for the growth of their consciousness and actively engage in its practices, are truly walking the path of magick.
If you notice, I use the word consciousness a lot. That’s because at its core, magick is about mastering your consciousness, hence the term "Psychokinesics" — using your psyche as a tool to shape reality, understand and navigate beyond three dimensions, and perform acts unseen by others.
Regardless of the labels — mystic, witch, sorcerer, psychic, energy healer — if you're working beyond three dimensions, intentionally using your consciousness to influence reality, you're a Mag. It doesn't matter if you're recognized as such or not.
Ultimately, whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or somewhere in between, recognizing and embracing your inner Mag could unlock new dimensions of existence. Sefirot School is here to guide you through discovering and nurturing these abilities, helping you realize your potential as a Mag.
